Morality & SPN

So far, I have seen Supernatural episodes 1x01 - 1x04, and it certainly is fun. Hot young men hunt monsters, save pretty girls, share throbbing sexual tension. Entertaining, certainly. Oh, and Amy Acker was in the last episode. Yay! ♥

I wonder, though, about the role of morality in the show. It seems that the Winchesters have no moral qualms about killing any monster/beast that crosses them, usually without any consideration of alternative tactics. All the monsters so far have been unambiguously evil, killing innocent people for no reason, so this is not really an issue. But I would find it more interesting to see how the brothers fare when faced with something that is "other", but not necessarily evil. I hope this is explored in the series, as this is the most interesting part of the mythology to me - what are these monsters, where do they come from, what do they want? Are they intelligent, can they communicate, how do they relate to humans? I've only seen 4 episodes and I'm already really bored of the "It's a vengeful spirit of someone who died unhappily!" plot hook.

Maybe I am hoping for too much from this show? Perhaps I should accept that it is just light entertainment, and not expect deep or thought provoking plot lines. Let's be honest, I'm only watching it for the Wincest anyway. ;)

If you're into SPN, you should really see Miracles. It's a similar idea; exploring the occult and unexplained phenomena but... better. Sadly, it was canceled after only half a series, because the religious nut jobs were offended by it. In fact, it was neither anti-religion nor anti-god (the main character is a lapsing Catholic who rediscovers his faith because of his experiences), but it was extremely dark, and dealt with both good and evil. It had some truly terrifying moments, and was extremely well written. It does lack the lovely Wincest, but to make up for that, it stars the gorgeous Skeet Ulrich of Jericho fame.

<s>I need a SPN icon.</s> Done! What a terrific promo picture. *pervs*

I have cracked, as was inevitable, and started watching Supernatural. I have only seen the first ten minutes of the pilot, and already I see why this whole fandom is mad for Sam/Dean. Dean jumping on Sam, wrestling him to the floor and rolling around on top of him in the dark... as brothers do. AN ENTIRELY INNOCENT DISPLAY OF BROTHERLY LOVE, IN NO WAY SEXUAL.

I blame tobymalfoy. :D

Thes first hour or so of the movie made me go "WTF, WHERE ARE THE SUPERHEROES?" But the rest of it was terrific fun in a very silly way.

/film has posted 40 hi-res photos from The Dark Knight. IS THERE ANYTHING GREATER THAN HI RES PROMOS? I THINK NOT. Nothing majorly spoilery therein, as long as you've seen the trailer.

Included in the above promos, William Fichtner will guest star. Fucking A! He's a terrific actor; I loved him in Invasion and Prison Break because he has such great presence on screen. I can't wait to see him on film. ♥

Sam Anders, of Battlestar Galactica. I am still catching up on series 4, so I am avoiding the BSG fandom right now, but I feel the need to voice this (hugely unpopular) opinion: Kara/Lee are interesting when they're flirting, but they make ONE BORING ASS COUPLE. They're whiny and teeny and mushy, and they bring out the most irritating aspects of each other. Kara/Sam, on the other hand, are HOT. They're unpredictable and compelling, and they have great chemistry. Sam >>>> Lee. *runs away from angry fandom*

Guess who's joining the cast for next season of Heroes? Bruce Boxleitner, of Babylon 5 fame. But that didn't work on a large scale, so I shrunk it down to make #2. At the last possible minute I decided to make a poetry book, but I just about got it finished in time. :D

Each piece is an attempt to capture the feel and the theme of the words, and how they might apply to the SGA crew. I feel a bit mean for painting Caldwell as the bad guy, because I actually rather like him. I've also started to find him rather attractive... and that's just odd. I'm most pleased with the one of Rodney and Carson, because the words are so well suited to them. ♥

+ poem
Auguries of Innocence by William Blake.
Full text can be found here.

+ resources
Resources used can be found here.

In my Batman-related excitement, I have made myself a new Batman journal layout. With CSS image rollovers, and a randomized header that rotates between Batman, Harvey and the Joker, huzzah! I feel like I cheated slightly as I based this on an edited version of Flexible Squares instead of writing it all from scratch like I did for my last layout. But my last version had some bugs, particularly on the comments pages, and I haven't the time to fix all of them. It was pretty easy to work with the style, the CSS was nice and neat. </anal code talk>

I spent an excruciating afternoon trying to get it to work in IE, but I finally triumphed! If you use IE, please, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, go and change to Firefox. It's easier to use, more customizable, more secure, an WEB DESIGNERS EVERYWHERE WILL THANK YOU. Stupid bloody IE, can't even do the box model right. The coding now works on IE6, but I haven't tried it on IE7 yet. Anyone using IE7 see any bugs?

I am SO VERY EXCITED about The Dark Knight, the new Batman movie. The posters look AWESOME and the new trailer is stunning.

Just marvel at the awesomeness of this poster. I love the flaming bat sign; and the feel of chaos and anarchy. Just how Gotham should be!
Also, marvel at THE GREATEST CAST IN ANY FILM, EVER.

This is absolutely my favourite shot from the trailer. It captures his indecision and confusion, searching for black and white right and wrong in a morally grey world.
It's reminiscent of the cover of Secrets of the Batcave, which is a favourite cover of mine. Because Bruce is teh hot.

This is just gratuitous perving over Christian Bale. IN A THREE PIECE SUIT.

I saw Thankyou for Smoking recently, which was both hilarious and poignant, and Aaron Eckhart was terrific in it. He's brilliant material for Harvey; determined, smarmy and vain.

Yes. Just yes. I saw an interview with Heath Ledger where someone asked what comics he'd read as inspiration for his portrayal, and he said he was basing the Joker on Arkham Asylum: A Serious House, The Killing Joke and The Long Halloween. MY THREE FAVOURITE BATMAN STORIES. From the brief clips I've seen, he seems to really have nailed the Joker just as I imagine him to be. It's a shame Heath won't be there to enjoy the release of the film. :(

Now is it just me, or are there serious slashy vibes in this picture? Something about the way Batman is looming is just... suggestive. Not that I really go in for Batman slash, and even if I did I wouldn't be a Batman/Joker shipper, or a Batman/Robin one either. Clearly, if you're going to slash Batman it could only be with Superman.
And maybe Flash.
And Booster Gold, at a push.
And he and Nightwing have always had something going on.

... Not that I'm into Batman slash.

If anyone wants to keep up to date with news about the movie, I've set up a feed of the spiffy Dark Knight Movie Chronicles blog at thedarkknightmc.

London mayoral elections

It's polling day here in London, everybody do the democracy dance!

I actually like the politics of all three main candidates, but my reaction to the campaign has been ">:O UNIMPRESSED FACE" due to the endless debates over important topics such as whether buses should be RouteMasters or bendy buses. Never mind housing, civil rights, or other transport issues, let's discuss the shapes of buses some more! Srsly?

However, I do think the electoral system in London is a vast improvement on the ludicrous first-past-the-post system used in national elections, which is antiquated enough to make even the most enthusiastic politico despondent. In London, you get to vote for first and second choice for mayor, and if there is not a clear winner (ie more than 50%) of the first votes, then a second round counts both first and second votes. You also get to two other votes, one for your local representative and one for a party for the London Assembly.

This is good for several reasons: you get to differentiate between your choice of mayoral candidate, one usually based on the personality and policies of the candidates, and your Assembly and representative choices, usually based on political affiliation. Also, it lessens the need for tactical voting: for example, where I was brought up is a massively Conservative area, so I used to vote Labour even though I'm a Liberal Democrat supporter because Labour are more likely to dent the Conservative lead. In the mayoral elections, however, I voted Paddick (Lib Dem) as first choice, because I'm a liberal at heart, and Ken (Labour) as second, because I'd rather have him than Boris (Conservative), and that's the real race.

I must say though, I have been hugely unimpressed with all the Boris bashing going on at the moment. Both real life friends and people on LJ have told me that "If you vote for Boris, it means you're an idiot and you don't understand anything about politics." This really pisses me off. I seriously considered voting for Boris, not because he's charming (though he is) or because I thought it would be funny (though it would), but because he's an extremely intelligent and capable man. I don't share his political values, but I do respect him and his experience, and I genuinely believe that beneath all the bluster there is a very sharp mind, and I believe he could run the city very well. Unlike Ken or Paddick, whose values I share but I have very little respect for.

I love Boris. He has some really good ideas, he's dedicated and personable and I would love to have him round to my house for tea. I would do Boris. However, in the end I decided to vote for Ken, the weasely little git, because although I want to punch him in his smug face, I think he's done an excellent job of running the city thus far.

(The acetate was actually from my copy of my undergrad dissertation, but never mind because dalek stencils > dissertation.)
Here in London we have three godawful free newspapers which are given out on the tube and the bus. I use "newspaper" in the loosest possible sense of the term. They are mostly trashy celebrity gossip and I hate them.

However, today and yesterday the trashy celebrity gossip was about David Tennant and Doctor Who, and I'm fine with that. :D They had pictures and rumours from the filming of this year's Christmas special, which I cut out and kept and got ROYALLY MOCKED for by my friends.
I made the mistake of going into Forbidden Planet last week, and there are so many comics that I want!

I've been reading Formerly Known as the Justice League and I Can't Believe It's Not the Justice League recently, both of which are very amusing in a childish way. And this has reminded me of my epic love for Blue Beetle and Booster Gold, stars (ish) of the terrific 52 and The Omac Project. OMAC was my favorite comic of last year, but terribly sad. :( Damn you Maxwell Lord, you were a bastard and you got what was coming to you. Wonder Woman FTW.

But now DC are bringing Beetle back to life, hurrah! And he and Booster have their own series - Blue and Gold, the greatest heroes you've never heard of! This makes me happy, for surely they are the slashiest superhero team of all time - yes, even more so than Batman and Robin.

Oh, Booster, you enormous woobie. ♥

Yoinked from scans_daily. I'm not really sure what I can possibly say about that. I know what they would say though:

Sure. No, really, I believe you.

I also very much want to read Angel: After the Fall, the continuation of the story of Angel set after season 5. I had a quick flick through the second single issue in the store, it looks as if each character has their own little spin off story. Spike's was appropriately decadent! I was rather confused to see that Wesley had his own story, as I'm pretty sure I remember him being dead. Hmm. The artwork looked ok but not great; the style was rather chunky and heavy, which suits Angel and Spike well but not the others.

I'm pretty sure I've seen that shirtless!Spike-with-concubines fanart before!

There was Doctor Who issue #2 in store as well. To be honest, this is not a highly intellectual comic. But it does look fun! The artwork is very basic but highly stylized; I like it for the Doctor because David Tennant has such distinctive facial features, but it doesn't work so well for Martha.

And don't even get me started on the new Batman which I want to read...

Having finally got internet sorted at my new house, this weekend I have been catching up on TV.

Torchwood 2x13:
Tosh! *weeps* You are a Big Damn Hero. What a way to end the series, talk about heart wrenching. I have even started to warm to Owen this season - I think being dead has forced him away from the girls/booze/party persona that annoyed me in the first season. My favorite Owen moment was when they are all on the roofs, looking out over the explosions in Cardiff. Everyone else is screaming or panicking, and Owen just looks blank. Like his heart's been broken too many times for him to cope with any more. ♥

I am surprised at how well Jack is holding it together. It would be interesting to see him snap and really lose his way - after spending several hundred years buried alive, you would think he'd have some full-strength crazy going on. Let's hope we see that next season. :D

Also, I am going to refer to Ianto as "Eye Candy" from now on.

Doctor Who 4x01:
Catherine Tate, you are teh awesomeness! I'm not sure how well known she is outside of Britain, but she's a bit of a national treasure here. I think it's fun to see David Tennant up against someone who has a personality as big as his! The scene with the Doctor and Donna miming at each other through the window had me laughing out loud. I would say that the plot for the episode was so-so, but it was worth watching just for seeing those two interact. I enjoyed Martha at times, but she was always a bit of a push-over, and she never really challenged the Doctor in he way Rose did. I think Donna will though, she certainly insults him with gusto!

I've noticed that the original score for both Who and Torchwood has been particularly good recently. Although the big soaring strings at poignant moments lean towards cheesy at times, the incidental music has been great. The music playing while Donna and the Doctor are hanging from the window-cleaning platform was especially awesome. I'm not sure about the new theme music though, it's a bit "we are young and trendy and ROCKING" for my taste. I liked the dorky electronica!

Also, OMGROSE! Her appearance made me run around squealing. Does this mean she's going to be coming back for more episodes? The way she faded out suggests that she's still living in the parallel reality, but maybe she's found a way to visit our reality. I would love to see her back in the show, but I'm not sure I could cope with the emotional turmoil. I HAVE STILL NOT RECOVERED FROM THE TRAUMA OF DOOMSDAY.

Now I must download Who 4x02 and NEW BSG, WOOT!

1. My new house is very spiffy indeed. However, we have no internet. :( And Glastonbury tickets are on sale today, so my housemates and I have trekked out to uni, at 7AM ON A SUNDAY. UNIMPRESSED, MICHAEL EAVIS, UNIMPRESSED. And it's snowing outside! Not just a little bit, but seriously heavy snow fall. Urgh.

2. I have been yabbering on about how great it would be to have a dirigible in London since I moved here. Certainly the best way to beat the traffic - and so much more stylish than the tube. I watched Rise of the Cybermen last night, and there they are, beautiful air ships floating over London. AWESOME. I'm formulating a plan.

3. I finally watched the end of Doctor Who season 3, and I was most impressed. Doctor/Master is clearly the ship of winners! Also, I Can't Decide by the Scissor Sisters is my new evil overlord theme tune. I am bitterly jealous of those with TVs who have already seen the start of season 4 and the Torchwood finale.

4. What I really need for my paintedspires piece are large, high quality and bright caps from the first scene of Doppelganger. Can anyone share?
ETA: I got one that I needed from SG caps, so now all I need is this shot in HQ. Anyone got one?

5. Mmm, pretty Tennant. Lyrics from Across the Universe (I was listening to the Rufus Wainwright version, but it's originally a Beatles song). Textures from ownthesunshine and apod.

This year I'm doing a masters in the Philosophy of Mental Disorder, which I have been loving, but I have the most obscene amount of coursework to do. I have 30,000 words to write for June! The good news is, however, that I pretty much finished essay #5 of 9 last night, and I now have 15,000 words. Half way there.

So thus far I have done:

Can mental illness be understood through comparison with physical illness?
Discuss with reference to the work of Szasz and Kendell.

Can the cognitive revolution be understood as a Kuhnian paradigm shift?

Is consciousness necessarily irreducible?
Discuss with reference to the work of Nagel and Dennett.

Is schizophrenia a reliable and valid scientific concept?
Discuss with reference to Models of Madness, edited by Read et al. (needs a better title)

Does Jackson’s Knowledge Argument provide sufficient evidence to accept the existence of qualia and to refute physicalism?

I think it's feasible to do the remaining 4 essays in 2 months. Just please don't mention the dissertation!

I'm off back to London today, and I'm moving into my plush new apartment tomorrow. All very exciting. :D My parents are helping me out by bringing up my stuff at the weekend, so I'm sorting out what they can bring from the stuff which I absolutely cannot live without, even for a few days. And, uh, there's quite a lot of it (computer, library books, clothes, comics, food, coffee etc etc etc). I feel like the Cat.

Lister: I said, "Take a few essential basics you couldn't bear to leave behind."
Cat: Right! These are all I'm taking. Just these, and the other ten racks.
Lister: You can take two suits and that's it.
Cat: Two suits? Then I'm staying!
Lister: You can't stay. By the time I come out, you'll be dead.
Cat: Two suits is dead! Hey! If I cut off my leg and leave it behind, can I take three?

I'm not sure when we'll get internet access sorted for our new place (OH, THE WOE!) so I might be offline for a few days. See you soon!
